![]() One small problem I have with Lua based frameworks is difficulty of debugging. The exact reason I have not tried Moai yet is the lack of a clear/complete documentation, so your project will certainly come in handy and it is bookmarked. Good luck in your journey!Īlso make sure you checkout One Game A Month Challenge it will be an epic adventure to build 12 games in 2013 we have over a thousand devs already signed up So as always it comes down to personal preference. Here is why I'm not objective: I am working on TrexGL to make moai easier for new comers an also getting ready launching. It is also open source so there isn't an upgrade fee every 1 1/2 year or so. But with that being said moai is a very powerful SDK with very rapid development thanks to its Lua binding. Moai does not have very good docs and it is not meant for beginner gamedevs. Futile is a great lib and I happend to know the author but I still don't feel it can provide me with anything more than moai. Unity is much better documented in every way but I to find it cumbersome and overkill for 2D. You can see my most recent MOAI game screenshots and unity game play video at my blog. I use unity for 3D and moai with my TrexGL library on top of it for 2D. I think Unity is awesome for 3D stuff, but I will never ever have the resources to make decent 3D art or a decent looking 3D game, so that is not interesting to me at this point.Ĭame in to comment but I realized that I wouldn't be objective but I'll try to give you my opinion. I was also thinking of trying Moai, but I would be very interested in understanding if it makes sense, in your opinion, to go with Unity vs any of these free frameworks if I am making a 2D game. I also tried Futile and the performance was better but not comparable to doing the same level with Haxe. I have looked into Unit圓D and Haxe so far, and even super-simple tests (a copy of the first level of Super Mario Bros) I have done following many tutorials and suggestions to improve performance in Unit圓D when making 2D games show that Unity is VERY cumbersome and slow when it comes to make simple 2D games. So, I would like to make some 2D games, pixel-art based, and at the same time I would like to learn a game making framework I can use for the next 2-3 years at least.
